Labor of Love

There are very few reasons I'd pull an all-nighter these days. My sister-in-law Wendy is one of them. This girl is amazing and I love her to pieces. And yesterday she married Greg, who is also pretty great. Yay them!

Wendy requested that I make their cake, thus the all-nighter. I thought it might be interesting to let you know what goes into these babies. First, put the kids to bed. Then, get your husband to load some tunes on the laptop to keep you company all night. Spray paint silver the ugly gold mirror you found for 13 bucks (better than a $90 platter):

Next, cover your cardboard cake rounds with tinfoil (9:15-9:30pm)

Mix up all your cake batter. I use cake mixes enhanced with sour cream, butter flavoring, eggs, etc. (this ditty took 9 batches of batter) and pour into your various greased cake pans, then bake 'em all while making frosting, surfing the internet, packing for the wedding day, and straightening your hair(9:30-3am):

fill each cake (3-3:30 am):

frost those puppies, and don't even get me started on trying to get buttercream smooth (3:30-5am):

Insert dowels into bottom 2 layers to support cake, then stack them and pray they don't smoosh. Try to touch up damage (5-5:30am):
Why go to sleep, gotta leave in an hour and a half. Finish getting dressed and wake up your family. From 4:30-5:30pm add the flowers and ribbon and heave a sigh of relief it didn't smash somehow on the way to the reception, you can't really seatbelt these babies.

Cakes have become something I only do for family.
It's fun but just sooo much work. And then they just get eaten and smooshed in faces.
Well, sure love ya Wendy and Greg! We're glad you got married.

Wow, I am amazed. How cool that you did that and I love that you put the whole process on your blog for us to see! It is one of the prettiest cakes I've ever seen! Way better than you would get from a bakery. I just have to know how did you function the following day without any sleep? I guess that's why you are so talented because you have so much energy!

You are AMAZING!!! You are so talented! I am impressed. Also, I am alittle weird, but I keep thinking about names for your little shop, and here a couple more that havve come to me in the early morning hours. Bow tie affair, Kate's bow tie affair, Bows N Girls. All right I think I am done with the names now. :)

That is a beautiful cake! I love to do cakes, but have never attempted a wedding cake...I like to say that one day I'd like to do it as a "business" but who knows if my skills will ever amount to much. You could definitely do it though!

Kate!!!! Wow! My mom made all of her sisters and my sister-in-law's cakes (I helped on Natalie and Becky's). I have been through the stages many a time but never seen anything quite like this masterpiece. You are so talented, there just aren't words. Way to take photos of the stages so your new sis can remember just how blessed she is to call you family.
