House #1
Cool red clinker brick
The real seller on this house is the open floor plan. Hard to see here, but the living room is open to the dining room and both have open doorways into the kitchen. It really feels a lot bigger than the other homes here that all have the rooms separated by a central staircase.
This is also the best kitchen, all new Corian counters, stainless steel appliances, cabinets, built in sink. Awesome.
The yard on this house is bigger and mommy deer and two Bambis came to visit while we were seeing the house.
Want to do to this house: finish the basement, add color to wallsWe like: kitchen, very open floor plan, big yard
what we don't like:
kate isn't a fan of the garage in front and how tall it seems since it's on the uphill side of the street and doesn't like the outside look as much as. . .
house #2
Living room is very nice, but is closed off from the dining room and kitchen
Bedrooms are painted charmingly and Kate loves the arched window in the master. But two bedrooms have no closets.
Kitchen is nice, but very narrow and closed off from dining and living rooms.

Hard to go wrong, they both look really nice. I would say go with inside feel over outside looks. But, I think that they both look great from the outside.
On first impression, I vote for clinker brick. I don't think the outside is bad at all. Good kitchen. Paint is easy, so don't let the color of the rooms decide it for you. No closets is tough. And I think a cramped kitchen would definitely make me throw tantrums. my humble opinion.
ps - mike meant in his email that he liked the look of the red clinker brick one better. And I also thought shutters would add a little sumpin.
I also like #1, simply for the open layout. I also liked the outside look and agree that shutters could be cute. And if it has more yard space, I'd definitely go with it. However, those stairs look like they might be a pain when it starts to snow...but that's why you have Kaleb, right? :)
Good Luck!
Malan votes for #2, cause it looks like the house in Huntsville
I like the clinker brick too. Wow -- home ownership. And to think Chris and I are going to be emptying our pockets to rent a yucky old, two-bedroom apartment in NYC. Good thing Magnolia's is right around the corner for some good cupcake-therapy.
I like the open floor plan and the yard in #1. Also, the garage would be especially nice in the winter.
#2 is more pleasing to the eye from the road but I would not like the lack of closets and the cramped kitchen.
well, i agree with everyone that the inside floorplan is more important than the outside... however, i looove how the second on looks! :)
plus, the second one has a finished basement which is HUGE. it just depends on how much work you two want to be doing while Caleb is in med school.
don't think you can go wrong either way. let us know the outcome!
Ditto to what everyone else has said. I really like the look of the first one both inside and out. Big floor plan and big yard equals happy family.
I agree that #2 is super charming from the curb, but #1 is still good looking outside. I would have to say that #1 wins out over all because it would be more comfortable to live in and I would guess that you'll spend about 99% of your time living in the house and less than 1% looking at the facade of the house. Also, I think the unfinished basement on #1 is actually a plus because I know you guys will make it amazing just like you did on Mom and Dad's basement. Tough choice. Good luck.
I like #1! It's very easy to slap on paint - think of the color palette possibilities! And the open-ness. (One feature that we love, love, love about our house is that it looks dinky on the outside - we almost didn't walk in... but it's LARGE on the inside!)
And we are building a closet - in fact, I have a design model - we added a built in dresser, shelves above it, a desk, and a small portion for longer items. It works well for a small space.
From Adam:
here is how i pick my houses, first do you have to plug your nose when you pull up to the place, second does it take you both hands and maybe a couple toes to count the junker cars on the lawn, third are there any homeless guys livin in said cars and lastly i am always more worried about the feel of a place than the look, cuz you can change the look. i would take the first one. that way you can have the dungeon feel in the basement and have you also closets to play hide and seek in. not to mention deer for the housewarming BBQ!!!
I think bambi is trying to tell you something. Both homes look fabulous, but I'd go for #1.
I'm leaning towards #1, like Joey said...you'll be living IN the house more than you'll be staring at the front. Plus, you will have so much fun with that basement! Good luck. Maybe we'll buy a house in 5 years or so :)
They are both so nice... but I actually think the first one looks the nicest. I like how tall it is and I love the landscaping... I'm envying all the GREEN right now (because I live in the desert!)
I like number one. I'm in to open living spaces. I also really like red brick.
I think you made the right choice. I like the first one.
