What I Didn't Know Was Cool About My Mom

1. Her love for beautiful things. Like pewter serving dishes, the good china, and her vintage green glass goblets that I always thought were just old. I'm starting to get it, Mom. Those little touches make special occasions special, and a home lovely.
2. The damask wallpaper in her bedroom. Mom, I'm going to stop bugging you about taking it down, because it's cool again! You knew it was only a matter of time. . .

3. Her mad skills on the violin. She really is amazing. As a kid, I used to love to dance around the living room while she played. I didn't realize until much later the career in music she could have had, but gave up to raise 12 children. And don't think I'm not kicking myself for pooping out on the violin lessons she gave me.

4. How she wears aprons in the kitchen. She even had one on yesterday when we skyped her in Mexico. Practical, yet feminine. I'm so totally carrying on this lovely tradition, Mom.

5. How she made us breakfast every day. Maybe she doesn't have a sleep-in gene, but I seriously did not appreciate how hard it is to pull oneself out of bed to make a hot meal for the earliest riser in the house. That really says, "I love you!"

Mom, you are so cool in so many ways that I'm still discovering. The more time I spend as a mom myself, the more I understand what a wonderful mom you are. I hope someday my kids think I'm cool, too.
