The hose spigot in our garage sprung a leak while we were gone. A fine, misting leak that sprayed our entire garage with a delicate layer of water every day. Temperatures in Pittsburgh were in the high 80's much of the 30 days we were gone. Thus our nice, dark, hot, wet garage became the perfect host for this:
Are you just terrified? Some of this crud was half an inch high. So for the last two weeks I've been chucking out most of our newly rusted out/moldy stuff and scrubbing every surface with bleach. Even after showering compulsively I smell like a swimming pool, and not in a good way.
Miracle #1: The rusted over drain in our garage floor let out enough moisture to prevent our adjoining basement from flooding.
Miracle #2: Somehow our only mode of transportation (and we are certainly in no position to secure another any time in the next, um, 4 years), our much beloved Mazda van, escaped untouched. No rust on any metal, no mold or mildew anywhere on the outside or inside. EVERYTHING else in the garage was COVERED with mold and rust. our van was pristine. What?!
We feel pretty dang blessed.

Pretty dang blessed to be sure! But seriously, that is so gross. Wish I was there to help!
You are a saint for cleaning that up; seriously, though, who knew a garage could be so crafty? Yuck-o.
that ther is the purdiest picture of mold i ever did see.
This would have made a fascinating science experiment. Too bad you didn't have a teen in residence to photograph the progress day-to-day.
Yikes! I'm sorry! Not much of a welcome home present.
Gaaah! What is that? The floor? A rug? Crazy. So glad your car was safe, definitely a blessing. I'm reminded of when we drove to the cabin with two little ones, pulled into the garage, then all four tires went flat. But only after we had safely pulled into the garage. Hope you get that fresh bleach scent out of your skin soon.
I think its really pretty. From here.
You remind me of the time I spent days staining our porch beams and smelled of it all night.
Glad you conquered.
I mean, it's pretty.
wow. i'm glad all is "okay." but really really glad your Van is untouched and your house was unscathed.
what a welcome home gift. gah.
i'm not gonna lie... that picture put the fear of death in my heart. godspeed, kate!!
