Thrift Store Makeovers. . .episode 1

At great risk of boring everyone, I will now share what I would share with my family if I lived in the vicinity: my snowed in thrift store makeover projects. I would have taken "before" pictures, if I only had a brain.

Thrift store frames + leftover fabric + leftover spray paint + sandpaper + cork board=
New bulletin boards for Malan and Jane's artwork in their room. Total cost: $5.00
Thrift store S&P shakers + leftover paint=
fun vintage look shakers. Total cost: $1.50
Thrift store frame + spray paint + back board + chalk board paint=
New way to hopefully force me to plan my menu. Total cost: $11.00
Sweet gem of a thrift store find, as is, with secret box on top for little girl treasures. $30 bucks.
Plus beautiful art and softie by my talented dear friend Star.
This is in the girl's room, which (after 1.5 years and 4 thrift stores) is almost ready. More pictures soon.

So. . .when I went to get framing done for our family picture (taken by the our friend Sarah, bless her heart) I had my trusty 1/2 off coupon and guess what they quoted me? $198.00. HALF OFF! What the. . .
But once again, my reliable thrift store came through for me. Lovely ornate vintage frame: $3.00. Thaaaat's right. Three.
Last the best: my valentine must have picked up on my affinity for old stuff. Caleb rigged up this charming little bud vase and told me it's for when the girls bring me little flowers from the yard. I absolutely love it and sheesh, how thoughtful. It hangs on doorknobs, chair backs, and wall hooks.

It is snowing hard for the 13th day straight and we are bored. If I have to break up one more cabin-fever induced fight over wooden-spoon wands or which color of plate someone gets. . .(I have thrown away several plastic dishes this week. . .if there are no pink plates they can't argue about them.  I am the meanest mom.)

Snow be darned. But at least we're getting a few things done around here.

I'm totally coveting that awesome dresser - lucky duck! I found some good stuff today actually (vintage Fisher Price).

That's how you have such a gorgeous life during med school! I get it! Now I want one...

We usually have a different approach to thrift stores. See my upcoming post about this past weekend.

Oh, and I also like the "Honey-dos" on the black board.

That is awesome. I'm so tired of being snowed in and the boys getting no excersize. We go to $1 movies. Projecting would be much better.

I could never spell ecersize! :)

Totally not a boring post! What fun treasures you've created! I wish I had great thrift store finds, but Abilene is not the best place to thrift... maybe in my next life... one can hope!

Oh, the pretties! Love the vase thingy. They seem to have cooler thrift store items in PA. Or you just have a better eye. That's it.

OOH I love that you have a vision for making these things. When I go to thrift stores I see old yucky things that I would have given to a thrift store.! :)

Also I have been there and done that with the throwing away objects we only have one of...I'm starting into it with objects we only have two of now that the 3rd has a very strong um scream... I mean opinion about things.

I LOVE the dresser by the way!

I am in love with all your fabulous finds!
You are seriously a genius decorator!
I am currently in storage solution mode, but one day hope to get in home decor mode. My favorite recent find is a set of owl nesting dolls I found at a yard sale. Not very practical but oh so cute!

Okay, here's the plan: you come to my house and enjoy the sunshine, all the while sprucing this place up a bit...I could use your sense of style and vintage charisma around this abode. And that dinner menu. Because it looks way too yummy not to share. I'm adding that butterscotch pie recipe to my blog soon. Must...find...time...

Really great things. I realized that those cork boards for the girls artwork are pretty big, right? So fun.

Oh Kate, I love this! Your projects are fantastic! Bummer about being all snowed in and all, but great work! I am currently working on a bed for my Madi that was a DI find!

These projects motivate me! I am frequenting my local "DI" stores more often and I'll let you know what treasures I come across.

Your blog is such a delight to read! You can tell that your house is a home. Your daughters will have great memories of these snow days, er, weeks!

Makes me wish I didn't live in a city where thrift stores were almost as expensive as regular stores...

How did you get Caleb to cook on Thursday?

Very impressive. The only part in this post I can relate to is the part about bored kids and breaking up fights.
