Oh beautiful early 1900's bungalos/craftsmans within our budget, how I wish you had even semi-decent school districts to go with you. I would make you mine.
Instead, you taunt me with your abundant porches, your grand staircases, your 5-panel doors, your built-ins.
But I guess it's important that my kids not get shivved.

Garage-for-house suburbia, here we come.

It's not just the schools, it's the neighborhood! Don't go--you will die!! :) but you know that. Did you come across the Hale, Yale and Harvard streets? You know you want Bartlett. Such a nice homey town.
I respectfully disagree about the neighborhoods. Those look like midtown houses.midtown is amazingly beautiful and not dangerous but yes, you would have to send your kids to private school and your neighbors would be dinks or dog people.I also felt uneasy about cookie cutter suburbia at first but you get used to it. It is kind of like being dead inside. I totally love those houses. I am Joey by the way.
I'm sorry you can't get the home you are dreaming of...perhaps in the next city. I've been to Memphis.. and as you clearly now, it has it's scary parts. With that said, I have traveled enough to know that every city has these parts and every city has something lovely about it also.
I hope you get settled in quickly, if even in a cookie cutter home. {You'll make any house incredibly welcoming.}
Love,
R~
