I spent last week poring over paint samples and painting and moving furniture and rifling through old boxes of thrifted picture frames, trying to quickly force my house into some sort of presentable state. This is because I was in charge of hosting book club this week and I wanted to fake like I'm all put together and stuff. Nothing like a deadline and a bunch of people you want to impress to get you to wrap up the projects you've been dragging your feet on. But probably you're more self-motivated than I am.
On the day of book club, Olivia and Emme gave their best efforts to following me around re-making messes I'd just cleaned up. Sweet little things.
The kitchen help. I may have slapped his behind thirty times in passing, I was so happy to have him around more this week. (Audiology rotation=happy wife) I know I'm a little (lot) crazy at times like these. So good game, Hon. Thanks for your hard work.
It was a bit of a frantic week, and we are seriously lacking in the clean laundry department, but pulling things together for a special occasion like this is the manna in the wilderness of my everyday mothering. It feeds my hungry, wandering, creative soul.
Book club recipes:
Chicken and white bean stew recipe here. This stew is so good you will cry culinary tears of joy. Another of my sister juli's creations. I use chicken breasts not thighs, add cooked potato chunks, use jar alfredo instead of refrigerated, and heat it through in a pot on the stove rather than in a crockpot because I rarely manage to plan that far ahead.

I love the sticky centerpiece. Thanks for letting me eat two of those cookies. They really were delicious.
You can seriously go all out! Everything looks fabulous, Kate! I wish I had half your energy to make the place presentable for special occasions . . . I can never muster up enough oomph to make things nearly as nice as I'd like, and never half as nice as your place turns out for special occasions. Kudos to you!
Those chocolate cookies are DE. LISH.; Absolutely wonderful. Everyone reading this that has the opportunity to try them but has not yet had them, get yourself to Kate's house as soon as she is able to make a batch to share with you! They are awesome! :-)
Love and happy thoughts,
Dave
I want to be in your book club!!! ...or any club for that matter! Aw, for a smidgin of your creative abilities... enough of my covetousness!
I totally know what you mean, a get together at my house does more than all my good intentions sometimes. Now for that laundry? naw. :)
gifted, gifted. :)
Thanks so much for book club!! As I was reading your post I was thinking that I need to ask you for some of those recipes. So thank you for posting them!! The food was delicious. Your house is so cute too!!
I love the lamp! The blue looks great on it. Miss you
Looove the midcentury dresser/buffet. Thrifted? I'm guessing you painted the white? Love it. It looks like everything turned out great! That Caleb sure is a good egg ;)
Ah, yes, the joy of trying to impress people and seem like we have it all together. :) Such fun. Although, I find it difficult to believe that you DON'T have it all together, you must be really REALLY good at faking. :) I may just have to drive down one of these days to try one of those cookies... worth 7 hours in the car?
oh kate. you are so fabulous.
now, everything LOOKS amazing, but i am here to attest that everything TASTED even amazinger. :) that is quite a feat. and the conversation was awesome. and it was totally worth the tired days afterward. sorry we stayed so long, but you have to know if you make things that fun and cool, people will stay. i love watching your house transform from regular to katetastic. my favorite thing now is your entryway. you made that dresser so awesome. you are so good at finding crazy cheap stuff and making it look good. ok, i need to stop commenting. you already know how much cool i think you are. .....
Love, love your buffet/dresser and how it is styled. Pinning it now. Did you find that lamp and needlepoint at a thrift store? They are awesome!
