Oh, this girl. I'm pretty humbled to be her mother. A few words about Malan...
She let me tag along on her class field trip as long as I walked fast enough that she could keep her sights on her crush, the smart, world traveler kid with the nice tan.

She's not really one to enjoy costume days at school, but she knows how much I love playing dress ups with my girls so she humored me on fifties day (and packed a change of clothes for later.)
Most days Malan asks if she can make something in the kitchen. She is the official dessert chef of our home but also can handle most breakfasts and lunches, and whips up a mean smoothie. It's interesting to see how different personalities in our family jive. Usually Olivia and Jane will pair off to play something imaginative, while Malan is definitely the queen at dispelling a bad mood for Emme by asking her to help make a treat or taking her off to a soft corner somewhere to read. She is well-loved by her sweet little cousin Maryanne because she dotes on her so lovingly.
She has worked her way through most of the young adult novels we own, twice, and I can't seem to keep her in books from the library unless I go more often than I want to.

Emme, Olivia, and I went to cheer her on at her school field day where she ran the egg on a spoon race for her class. She was pretty pleased when I told her that I overheard her friend Evan and another boy saying cheerfully, "She's better at that than me!" "Yeah, way better!"
In elementary school, I used to look forward to field day all year and I was surprised by how excited watching my daughter get to participate made me. I also loved watching Malan proudly introduce her little sisters to her friends and it was heartening to watch all the kids cheer each other on, and cheer extra loudly for kids who were behind or who fell or did something potentially embarrassing.
I am continually impressed by the great kids Malan attends school with here.
Malan and her speedy friends won the relay race for the 3rd grade.
Malan does not yet love practicing her violin. But she is fastidious and faithful about it, and I am loving the improvement I see. I really respect that she works so hard at it when it truly is such a difficult beast to master.

I am more impressed with this girl all the time. She is bright and responsible and diligent and kind. By nature of her strong desire to do her best, she deals with some anxiety and stress, but she's also quite self-aware and knows when she needs to take a bike ride to get away or head over to her Aunt Katie's for some cheery chatting.
It was extra sweet to take her along with me to the General Women's Meeting of our church in April as it was one of those times where we get to be dear friends as well as mother and daughter. We have our moments of course, as I assume all moms and daughters do, and I'm getting well-practiced at apologies (giving and receiving) and finding our groove again after the frustrating moments. But she is, as they say, simply a good egg and I'm so very glad she's ours.

There is so much to love about this post! You compliment your children SO beautifully.
All true. That's a good girl you got there and we are SOOOO excited to see you NEXT MONTH!!!
I have been told through other sources how mature and helpful and impressive Malan is. This only confirms it.
That is all true about the lovely Malan! We can't wait to hug her and hang out with her as well as your other beauties =)
Love this post! She seems like a true gem, like she takes after her momma in more than looks. :-)
She really is a mature girl. I can't wait to watch how she continues to grow into a woman. She has an excellent example to follow.
What a great tribute to malan! I love that girl more than words can say. Although sometimes her extreme patience and ability to sweetly distract and cheer up my kids gives me low self esteem as a grown-up mom :). I love how she calmly endures Luke's rough wrestling and I know he adores her for that. It's so awesome for me to have such an example-setting peacemaker as the oldest cousin of this bunch. We are huge malan fans over here. Great post kate!
Oh, dear Malan! I am so thrilled just to see you holding your violin! I will look forward to hearing you. I did not much enjoy practicing either, but I can tell you that every hour I put into practicing as a girl has paid me untold dividends as a busy mother and grandmother who really does not have much time to practice, but who still finds great joy and comfort in still being able to make music because I practiced quite faithfully as a girl.
Oh my gosh, I love this post. And I love Malan. She's so bright and hopeful. I think it's so sweet that she nurtures Emme. I also love how you speak so respectfully and tenderly about your girls.
I love that girl. She really is so sweet. I have always noticed what a kind, responsible, and mature young woman she is. Definitely a good egg ;)
i love this! kate, your girls are going to treasure these words always!!
Cannot wait to see you all next month! :)
What a lovely girl. I find my affection for my oldest growing too.
What a girl. Loved reading a little about her latest. Your girls are the sweetest and I just think you are the most amazing Mom Kate! Really, I admire you so much. Oh and your book nook, reading bench is just amazing! LOVE! I think I'd love being a kid at your house!
Miss you and the girls (and Caleb) so very much! Fun to see your pics! Love you! Hugs!
What an amazing girl!
And I am really, really coveting your window seat/book shelves! That just looks like Heaven right there! Did you guys do that yourselves in the house? Maybe you posted about it before and I have forgotten. Seems like I'm vaguely remembering something, anyway it is fabulous and I really want one!
