Just Heard

Valley Elementary, the home to all my pre-teen school memories and sentiments, is getting the wrecking ball. They will be building a brand new school in Eden and this baby will, I assume, become a subdivision. I feel nostalgic and a bit sad. I guess I kinda thought if we ended up here in the valley, my kids would go here and I could walk through the halls with them and relate all my memories and impart my wisdom. Ha ha. So I thought instead I'd jot a few memories down here and otherwise, my journals will just have to do for the kiddos. Those of you who were fellow Bulldogs, feel free to share what you remember! I'd love to hear your memories.

1. Ceramics with Mrs. Shiozowa at recess
2. Kickball behind the school
3. Dodgeball in the gym
4. The much anticipated 6th grade dance
5. Lagoon day
6. The multi-purpose room which doubled as my gymnastics class room
7. 2nd grade puppet plays
8. Feeling so cool when we got lockers for like 2 weeks at the end of sixth grade
9. "Going with" boys: don't talk to them, just flirt from across the room, write them notes, run away when they plot to kiss you after the school play, and dump them if they talk to other girls. Some of them were: Logan B. (top 2nd from r), Justin K.(top 1st on l), Cody T. (mid 3rd from r), fun memories.
10. Wearing my DAD's shirt on picture day?! Who let me out of the house like that?!
11. Mrs. Evans: the newspaper we wrote, class office elections, and just being an awesome teacher
12. Playing Kemp at recess
13. Sliding around on snowbank footslides and how thrilled I was the day I fell on my behind and Lane B. offered me his gloved hand and pulled me up. That was at least a 2 week crush!
14. The Shakespeare plays. We were so cool.
15. Four square
16. School lunch in the gym and how much cooler you were if you brought your lunch from home
17. How cute the 6th grade boys were when we were 5th graders.
18. How cool the 6th grade girls were when we were 5th graders.
19. Gerbeaus. (sp?) Yeah, I got my two pairs at Savers.
20. P.E. at the park. I LOVE that park.
21. Red rover (please pick me!)
22. Never quite feeling cool, but always feeling like I had good friends
23. Music with Mrs. Davis (recorders, The Gypsy Rover, Rainbow Connection...)
24. Computers with Mr. Weight
25. Having a crush on a teacher who will remain unnamed
25. Always being excited to go to school. Nerdy? Maybe. But I just loved being around friends and the excitement of everything, new projects, new things to look forward to, friends to hang out with or boys to flirt with.

26. Nutcracker. Most of you will find your name on this program. How cool. I wish I had a video of us! That's all I can think of right now, but I really do love this school and will be sad to see it go. Feels like I'm losing a piece of my childhood. Sniff.

I thought they were going to remodel. Interesting. The class pictures are priceless! Dan would like to know when you went from being Katie Hale to Kate (of course I've always known you as Kate and didn't know Katie existed).

I am SO SAD! I loved Valley! I think Mike, Edith and I were the only ones to attend all TEN (!!!) years there K-9th. So the memories are the first third of my life (o.k. a little less, I'm old). My memories could go on for 20 pages. I'm so glad I attended my 20th Jr. High Reunion. We had a memory share, pass the microphone thing that went on forever. All those people are like cousins to me. Feel kind of fond of them all. And outstanding teachers: Mr. Bailey, Mr. Allen, Mrs. Clark.
It also makes me sad that Huntsville, the more historic town of the Valley (I think) is now a minor to Eden. Why does change make us sad?

Actually, I was in the first ninth grade class at Snowcrest. I will miss this school, too. Almost all my memories are the same as Kate's. Except I liked different boys. Hah, hah.

Thanks for the memories and pictures, I had to save them on my computer. Believe it or not I attended Valley elementary and Jr. High. It was a long time ago but I had some of the same memories. Thanks for sharing!

I can't believe it! I can still remember the smell of the place. I too loved ceramics with Mrs. Shiozowa. but i did not like dodgeball at all. and I don't even remember having a lagoon day. We should have a Valley reunion.

sad . . . and hilarious. I love that you wore Dad's shirt in that picture. Like the day in first grade I refused to take my hooded coat off because my hair was messy. It's still messy. Aaah! Goodbye Valley E!

I love that you posted a picture of your class "after" you ditched our year and skipped a grade. Cute girl. I loved ceramics and still use a nativity I made. My secret crush was on Mr. Gardner...hated science though. Loved 1st grade with Mrs. Anderson and her story hour. Although I keep running into old friends that remember I was her only student allowed to take an afternoon nap after storytime... I miss dodge ball and lunchroom helpers in 6th grade. Ahhh! Oh and Bulldog Badges. I loved getting called down to the office to pick up the prizes. Oh and Field Day at the end of the year in the park with all the relay races and games. I ended up with a broken arm one year because Eric Hoffman was jealous "our" team won and he pushed me over while doing a cartwheel. Ahh! The memories. One last one was watching Matt Burton and Kate Jensen starring in the taming of the shrew. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!!!
