Keeping Busy

My girls have been so used to having oodles of cousins around to play with that this move has been a big change for them. I'm also trying to get used to being their only entertainment. Props to you moms out there who haven't lived close to family. I feel like such a baby for being homesick. But I'm finding that planning really helps make the time go faster and funner. We've decided to have themes for the week to accommodate our activities and get our brains thinking of fun things to do. Last week was science week.
We played with bug and alien clings on the front door (this also helped Jane figure out the glass door issue, hopefully no more face-smooshes.)
And we checked out the Carnegie Science Center. This place was pretty awesome. Our two faves were the train room (huge room of miniature old Pittsburgh with moving people, lights, cars, and trains running through it.)
And the water center. Just perfect for little kiddos.
This week is pet week. We checked out some pet books from our library, took care of our pretend pets yesterday, and made our own pet shop today. Jane and Malan made money to buy the pets and we earned the money by helping the pet shop owner take care of the animals. Then we went shopping for our own pet. The girls really loved it.

Tomorrow we'll go to the real pet shop, but I don't know how we're going to get out of there without a real pet. Any suggestions for a low maintenance animal friend?

I think maybe a hamster. Guinea pigs are too noisy. Gerbils are too shy. But ask the pet shop peoples, they should know.
You inspire me. I need to play more with my littles now that the three oldest are in school all day.

You are such a great mom. You're girls are so lucky! I just pay an overpriced pre-school to make up themes and entertain my kids for me :)

We did something like this awhile ago. We started with the letter A and focused on things beginning with it and went from there. Letters are great because you can do lots of different foods with them as well and they get you thinking in a general direction of what your topic should be. As far as pets go, good luck! We had a fish, it lived for a good 2 months. ;o)

It is really hard to be away from family. It helps to develop a good group of friends. My friends here in DC are totally my support network (and now I have to leave them to move to NY - :( )

I agree on the Hamster idea. I had two beloved hamsters and a gerbil in my time. The gerbil was hyperactive and liked to bite my finger. So I'd go with the Hamster. My hamster Chip was a trooper. He had to submit to wearing Barbie clothes far too often, which is probably why he ran away a couple times...

A Beta. Cheap, clean, food is inexpensive, and they live forever!
Not as soft and snuggly as a hamster or guinea pig though. You are such a fun mom, way to go.

Fun stuff with the girlies! Glad Jane isn't hitting the glass anymore. I love real pet shops just so I can show the girls pets but not have to actually have one. We do have a beta, though. And try as we might, it's still alive. I think your girls will love these memories!

fish can be replaced fairly unnoticed.{we've replaced a lot of dorothy's in our time}
we killed {accidentally of course} a friends hampster while pet sitting and apparently they have a short life span as the replacement they bought died a month later......
