Sometimes Irrational Fears Keep Me Up Late

We had a bedbug scare last week. (Pull out your brown paper bags and breathe in and out with me.)
Jane woke up with about 30 bites on one of her arms and blood spots on her sheet and when I found
a squirmy little bug on the floor under her bed I darn near put our house up for sale and burned all
our belongings on the spot. But it wasn't a bedbug. Just a little pollen-eating beetle and a creepy coincidence.

I still put the girls to bed on couches that night and scoured every crevice of our furniture/house
until 3 am looking for any other sign of bedbugs. I didn't find anything and we've had no more
bites since, so I'm hoping and praying that Jane just got chigger bites (gross, but SO much better than
bedbugs) from the park the night before.

Isn't it an unsettling feeling to think you've got some sort of insect infesting your home? And
bedbugs, I mean what's more Transylvania than a creature that waits until it detects sleep breathing
patterns to come out of hiding and feast on your blood? I'm pretty sure I'm a little more batty about
bugs than your average mother of four, but still. Super grateful it wasn't what I thought.

Anyway, here's to some bug-free and beautiful times around these parts lately:

Tea for two.

Malan's Law- "The law says all must be generous and kind, trustworthy and praiseworthy -The Pre[s]ident Malan Wilson."
 The return of "Fashion Carol."
Enid Lake pinecones, an Autumny reminder of happy times.
And stompin' boots. Just in case we run across any more vermin.

Oh! Nothing makes me feel more dirty and disgusting than the possibility of a bug infestation. So glad that you don't have to worry about bed bugs!!!

As usual, your pictures are amazing and your girls are so sweet and lovely. Not to mention lucky to have you for a momma.

Any chance you'd be up for get together next month? We have fall break and I need some sort of trip...

I'm actually way more paranoid about pinworms. We've had those before. Heebie-geebies!!
Glad you don't have them. But we'd love you guys even if you did.
Have I already told you I love your window seat? Cuz I do.

After living in NYC, I can totally relate to the bed bug paranoia. I thought we had them every other week. They are terrifying!

I just watched an episode of "Shark Tank" last night and one of the chosen investments was a an early-detection bed bug kit! Coincidence...

I bet you now have the cleanest house on the block. I loved how you told us the story and how you were putting vaseline at the base of the bedposts so they would get stuck. oh, isn't it nice when traumatic things get over and you can make a story or a post about it? I love the tea party and I too am a huge fan of fashion carol.

Dearest Kate,

I love reading your blog. Every time I read a post I try to leave a comment and it doesn't work. I will try again this time. Your life is so fun to read about. I hope you are still sending Caleb with Snickers because I hear life is rough where he's at. It looks like you are doing a good job holding down the fort and searching for bed bugs. Keep up the good work! You're amazing!

The question is, are you paranoid about bed bugs because you've had them in the past? Because we had them in our last apartment, thanks to our kind neighbors who brought them in, or by the lovely people at church that sat on the pews next to us. Either way, it was horrific, and I also have your level of paranoia about them. I never knew you could use Vaseline to catch them.

So glad it doesn't seem like it was bedbugs! Phew!

Who is that big girl on the left side of those pictures???? My goodness, she has grown!

We miss you all so much, Kate. Sending you happy thoughts and warm wishes!

Hooray for Fashion Carol. Again. As far as the bugs go, I think we just need to collect DNA of all the big birds we care about and then flood the world with DDT. Then use the DNA to clone the then extinct birds. I love Memphis, but at any given time I have like 50 bug bites.

yucky yuck. We're inundated with box elder bugs right now. But they just crawl on you. yuck. I also like your window seat - did you make it? Love fashion carol.

Aha. I see you have kept your comments open. Missed them have you? Ha ha. Thanks for your kind words on my blog. I can empathize with your bed bug scare. A similar thing happened to us when we first moved to NY. I had bites all over my tushy. AND the kids had some too. Freaked OUT. Turns out we just have a lot of mosquitoes in our back yard... :) Your fear is not irrational. There would be nothing worse than a bed bug infestation.

Look at you welcoming fall with that lovely strand from nature.

Your photos are so amazing- can I say that on every post?

Fact: I had bed bugs in a 'shall remain nameless hotel' because they redeemed them selves by giving me thousands of hotel points. You know, to make up for the disgusting bites on my legs. And my nightmare of practically throwing away or twice dry cleaning everything I took with me on that business trip. Gag. Ralph. Vomitoss.

Thanks for the laugh.. and bless your tired heart.
I heart you.

I'm with you. I'm so worried about bed bug infestations! I check our clothes after movies and the beds at hotels. I've just heard that to get rid of them is super expensive. Can't have that! Glad you guys are safe! And what a reminder to be grateful for not having them too! :)
