Caleb's Birthday

Caleb turned 34! Wow, I feel like we are getting so old to still be in school, or at least training, for Caleb's career. We have been doing this for 11.5 years...our whole marriage. It is a really long road, and some stretches have been extra tough, with Caleb putting in eighty to a hundred hour weeks and having to study or do research on top of that. But things are getting better every year and we only have two years to go! And I feel so grateful for how balanced Caleb has always tried to be, and how he always spends every minute possible with our family.

He brings so many good things into our lives. He makes us laugh and not take everything so seriously. He plays and plays with the kids, which is so good because I can lay it on too heavy on the work side of things. But when it's time to work at home, he digs in and gets things done, and makes it more fun for everyone by getting some tunes playing. I always forget how much more pleasant it is to work to music.

Caleb is incredibly steady, which is such an enormous blessing because I am not. I sometimes feel like if there isn't any drama in my life already, I try to create it. I take on projects that stress me out or volunteer for things that are going to be overwhelming, and it makes for a fair bit of upheaval in our lives. But Caleb just rolls with it and supports me and keeps plugging away behind the scenes (feeds the kids, does the dishes, handles bedtime) so that I can manage the things I've undertaken.  He has a gift with people and helps me feel calm in social settings instead of my inclination to be anxious and reclusive. I just feel like he balances me so well, and makes me better. Best of all, he is faithful and spiritually minded, and I'm so grateful for that.

Bonus: He likes to experiment in the kitchen, which, usually, turns out to be awesome. I requested an artisan bread book for my birthday, and Caleb has been the one to really get into making breads and pizza doughs and rolls and that has been so nice!

For his birthday, we made him breakfast in bed, featuring a strawberry pineapple mango kiwi flax chia smoothie, a delicious omelette, and fresh fruit.

And then the girls all piled on him and made him wear a purple birthday crown, and he was a good sport about it all, as always.
And here is a lovely collection of Caleb and Oscar, doing what they love best together. (Caleb is perma sleep-deprived, so he is always in need of a little nap. My favorite is the one where he gave Oscar a bath and then couldn't make it to the getting him dressed stage, and just fell asleep holding him in his towel on the couch. Poor guy! (Caleb, I mean. Oscar was fine.)

Caleb, someday for your birthday I'm going to let you sleep for three days straight. We love you so much and life would totally stink without you. Happy Birthday!

Oh man, I was already a Caleb fan but this post made me an even bigger one. He really is so great. We are the lucky eaters and tasters of his yummy breads and pizzas. It looks like he got a delicious birthday breakfast.
