The last of our Christmas cards just rolled out of my printer. I love sending Christmas cards, and I love receiving them.
But now I remember why I haven't sent out a Christmas card for the last two years. It's because when I take on a creative project, this happens:
1. box of fabric scraps used for malan's santa suit school project 2. tipped over electric pencil sharpener 3. stack of christmas library books 4. what remains of the box the girls cut apart to make a cardboard island 5. pink heart cookie cutter that didn't get back in the bin after we pulled out the christmas cookie cutters 6. doll broken leg cast 7. funnel, most recently used as a megaphone by emme 8. dancing muki that just got new batteries (yay. i think muki is about to get "lost") 9. alphabet blocks used to entertain emme for a minute 10. malan's "maniac magee" 11. jane's school work from yesterday 12. the vacuum cord-in case someone stops by it will look like i have intentions 13. jane's snack pouch 14. olivia's most recent treasure map 15. christmas cards laid out for envelope stuffing
This is the floor of my office. And don't kid yourself by thinking the rest of my house doesn't look just like this right now. A few children ago I think this state of things would have made me want to absolutely pull my hair out. But today during nap time, instead of cleaning, I made this little sign to go in my entry instead:
Hee hee. It'll last longer than a clean house, and I think I'm going to need it for the next 20 years. I would LOVE my house to be all put together and clean and perfectly decorated. So I try to keep things somewhat organized, and I browse Pinterest for new rugs, and drool over fabrics for our window seat cushion, and save my pennies. And it is coming together. Oh so sloooowwlly. But in the meantime, there are pirate cousins to play with and dress ups to wear and snack times to be had. . .
And our messy, imperfect house works perfectly for those good things.

I LOVE this post. I feel the same way. I just wish everyone had this healthy perspective of a house where people LIVE.
Thanks for keeping it real, Kate. :)
ha ha. so, to be honest though - i think you have a pretty "cool" mess there. i mean, as messes go. i like how everything tells a story. and the story tells of cute kids and a fun mom all being very creative. i love it. love your homemade cards! they will be very unique and artsy. way to think outside the box.
I'm excited about getting your Christmas card. Maybe I'll make one this year.
We love to see your kids and your pretty photos of pretty messes.
I love a lived in home. I have family members who keep a freakishly clean house and lets be honest, I feel underdressed when I'm there! I'd feel comfortable enough to take off my shoes and drink a cup of cider with you on your couch... I can't think of a greater feeling in a friends home than that.
Your cards are so beautiful. I'm not sending them out this year. I have a case of the can't want too's! Ha.
Merry Christmas, love,
R~
I love your sign! Eez a fabulous idea. Gotta say, though, that one picture with the pirate cousin looked pretty clean and perfect and organized.
The cards look pretty cool. This may be the earliest we get our cards out. Wanna race?
This is a great post! We definitely live in our house. :)
You could copyright, print, and sell your sign to Hallmark or Halemark. I'd buy one.
LOVE it! I need one to hang in my house. Last year I took my kids to visit an older lady in our ward and when I walked into her house it took my breath away, it was so clean! All I could think was how I wanted my house to be clean like that. Then I realized - some day it will be, today is not that day!
This post was nice to see. Not because I'm rejoicing that your floor was covered in life, but that I could say to myself, "self, it is okay to have things out" every once in a while. We do LIVE here!
Ha ha. Love the numbering/labels of floor items. I never notice a mess at your house; I just know I like to be there.
